Multiple Specializations to Pursue Your Specific Career Goals

For either an aspiring or experienced education professional, an advanced degree can open the door to a senior professional teacher license, a teaching specialization, or a move to new career within education or an adjacent field. Through John Carroll University’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Advanced Studies degree program, you can select from one of six different specializations for an individualized program that’s tailored to your career goals and provides the knowledge and skills, access to the latest education research, hands-on practice, and instruction from experienced educators to bring those goals within reach.

Climb Higher with a Graduate Education Degree from JCU

  • The M.Ed. in Advanced Studies program requires the completion of 30 semester hours and integrates field practice into courses.
  • Candidates can complete the program at their own pace, anywhere from 2-5 years.
  • Online or hybrid instruction is available for some program specializations.
  • Completion of the Advanced Studies program can fulfil the requirements for special licenses or certificates.

Offers an in-depth preparation in literacy, reading assessment, and diagnosis of reading programs. This specialization can lead to recommendation for the State of Ohio Reading Endorsement.

  • Each specialization requires a minimum of 30 semester hours for degree completion.
  • This includes a combination of core education courses, a specialized sequence of courses, and electives.
  • A Master of Arts (M.A.) course of study which includes a thesis is also available.

Provides classroom teachers with a more in-depth knowledge of their teaching field (English, social studies, biology, mathematics, or theology and religious studies).

Focuses on learning theories, human development, research methods, assessment, and measurement that can be utilized in a variety of settings and fields. In addition to teachers, this specialization is also ideal for those from social science backgrounds who want to pursue a master’s degree, or those interested in doctoral programs in Educational Psychology or related fields.

A program option in which candidates, in consultation with an advisor, self-design a program of study to meet their current professional needs. Courses may be taken in a teaching field (e.g., English) or in education or counseling.

Advanced Studies Education at John Carroll University

The M.Ed. in Advanced Studies program requires three foundational courses plus additional courses and electives, depending on the specialization:

  • ED 5100 – Foundations of Education or ED 5120 - Multicultural Education
  • ED 5810 - Research Methods
  • ED 5330 - Learning-Teaching
  • 12-15 credit hours in one sequence
  • 6-9 credit hours of electives (except otherwise specified in a specific sequences)

Some program sequences provide opportunity for elective coursework. Candidates may choose any appropriate 4000- or 5000-level Education, Counseling, or other academic course as an elective with approval from the advisor or the department chair. If a 4000-level course is used in a degree program, a grade of B or higher is required.

 

JCU offers an affordable tuition rate reflecting our commitment to educators. This rate is competitive with other Northeast Ohio institutions. Tuition scholarships and a limited number of graduate assistantships that provide a partial tuition waiver are also available.

The department is accredited by The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the Higher Learning Commission, and approved by the Ohio Department of High Education.
