John Carroll University's Bachelor of Science in Nursing program recently received conditional approval from the Ohio Board of Nursing. The BSN program now awaits final accreditation approval from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE).

Preparations are underway for a state-of-the-art nursing lab in the Dolan Center for Science and Technology. Students will use the lab for patient care training and BSN classes.

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the nursing workforce is projected to grow by 20 percent over the next six years. JCU’s new BSN program aims to supply the workforce with well-trained healthcare professionals who can pivot quickly, act resourcefully, and problem solve under extreme circumstances. University leaders say that, once fully accredited, the program will bring a Jesuit mission-driven response to a regional and national nursing shortage.

Crews are building the lab on the Dolan Center for Science and Technology's second floor above the Donahue Auditorium. The project will feature two main learning centers including high- and low-fidelity nursing labs.

The high-fidelity lab will feature two simulation beds for hands-on patient care training. Audio and video recording will track nursing students' movements as they participate in training activities. Faculty and students can access an adjacent viewing room to monitor the exercise. A conference room equipped with an integrated audiovisual system allows students to review their patient care training with peers and faculty in real-time.

The low-fidelity nursing lab will consist of 10 beds for the patient training practicum. BSN students will gain experience with patient simulator mannequins in the low-fi lab. Courses and other training in this lab will allow future healthcare providers to hone their skill sets.

In addition to the two labs, new office space is being built for BSN faculty and the program director. John Carroll is actively recruiting a leadership team for the nursing program, who will oversee and influence the program's direction.
